San Diego DUI Motorcycle Accident Leaves Two Injured
A man and his wife were injured in a motorcycle accident Wednesday after being struck by a suspected drunk driver.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 57-year-old Randall Arnold of Fallbrook was driving his 1997 Mazda pickup north on South Mission. He attempted to turn left on Almond Street and turned directly into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. The motorcycle's passengers, Elisabeth and Stuart Lessig, both 24, were ejected from the bike and thrown into the street. The two were taken to Palomar Medical Center to receive treatment for serious injuries. The southbound lanes of South Mission were closed for approximately one hour after the accident.
Randall, who also suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence. He was taken to the Vista jail and booked on DUI charges. According to reports, Randall was going approximately 50 miles per hour at the time the accident occurred. No details have been released regarding the nature of the injuries suffered by the victims.
While fortunately no one was killed as a result of this motorcycle accident, the victims may face a long road to recovery involving hospitalization, extensive surgery and physical therapy. Their medical bills may likely total thousands of dollars which could cause financial devastation if they aren't insured.
In addition to the criminal charges he faces, Mr. Randall could also face civil penalties if the victims decide to pursue a personal injury claim against him. Under California law, motorcycle accident victims may seek damages against a negligent driver for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
