An off-duty CHP officer was hurt in a motorcycle accident over the weekend.

An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer was involved in a motorcycle accident over the weekend in El Centro.

According to KSWT News, 30-year-old Adalberto Ponce was riding southbound on SR-86 near the Borrego Salton Seaway in El Centro when his motorcycle rear-ended a trailer. Ponce was ejected from the motorcycle and flown to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs for treatment. Authorities say that although Ponce was wearing a full face helmet and protective gear at the time of the accident, he still sustained major blunt force trauma.

The driver of the trailer was uninjured in the collision and neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be a contributing factor in the accident. Law enforcement officers are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident and it remains unclear how long Ponce will remain hospitalized. Hopefully, he will be able to fully recover from his injuries and resume his normal duties as a California Highway Patrol officer.

Should police determine that the driver of the trailer caused the motorcycle accident through negligent or careless actions, he could potentially face criminal charges for causing the officer's injuries. Under California law negligent drivers who cause injury or death to other motorists, including motorcyclists and bicyclist, may also face civil penalties in the form of a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.
