CHP Reports Decline in Motorcycle Accidents, Injuries in California
The Sacramento Bee reports that the California Highway Patrol's two-year, federally-funded program to increase motorists' awareness of motorcyclists may have paid off as there has been a decline in the number of motorcycle accidents.
According to a CHP news release, preliminary figures for 2010 from the CHP's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records system show that the number of people killed in motorcycle accidents in 2010 was down 9 percent from 2009. Additionally, the number of people injured in motorcycle-involved collisions appears to be down 8.5 percent.
The motorcycle safety campaign was spearheaded by the California Highway Patrol and funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Transportation put a "Share the Road-Look Twice" message on highway signs across the state. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol conducted several presentations encouraging motorists to look out for motorcyclists.
These efforts seem to have been successful in reducing motorcycle accidents in California, primarily because they have focused on encouraging motorists to look for motorcyclists. Most motorcycle accidents occur because motorists do not see motorcyclists, or fail to look out for them.
It is a motorist’s responsibility to look out for motorcyclists especially closely at intersections, and in the blind spots of their vehicle. Motorcycles may be easy to miss because of their slim frame, which is all the more reason why drivers must be more alert.
