Escondido Motorcyclist Critically Injured in Accident

A 21-year-old Escondido man suffered life-threatening injuries after a motorcycle accident that occurred along Bear Valley Parkway on Tuesday.

According to police reports, the unidentified motorcyclist was riding north along the parkway near Birch Avenue around 6:00 a.m. when he collided with a Saturn that failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection. The man was thrown from his motorcycle and into the road while the 29-year-old driver of the car lost control of the vehicle and spun around. He was then struck by another car heading south.

Another driver then approached the scene approximately ten minutes later. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Santee, apparently did not see the motorcyclist lying in the road and subsequently ran him over with his Dodge Dakota pickup truck. The motorcyclist was eventually taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Witnesses to the initial accident said the driver of the Saturn did not make any attempt to stop at the intersection prior to striking the motorcyclist. Police are still investigating the accident to determine who, if anyone, may be at fault. Authorities have acknowledged that the driver of the Dodge Dakota was driving under the speed limit and apparently was unable to see the accident scene as he approached the unlit intersection.

Should the motorcyclist survive his injuries, he most likely faces a long road to recovery which will potentially involve a lengthy hospital stay, extensive surgery and physical therapy. He will likely be unable to work for some time and there is also the possibility that he lacks sufficient insurance coverage to pay for his medical costs. Even after he achieves a physical recovery, it may take him some time to recover financially.

If the police determine that the driver of the Saturn was at fault in causing the accident, he may face criminal charges for his actions. In addition, the motorcyclist may choose to file a personal injury claim against him seeking damages for his pain and suffering, medical costs and lost wages.
