A Los Angeles man was killed Tuesday in a motorcycle accident near Devil's Slide.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Nicolas Narag was riding his motorcycle north on Highway 1 around 3:00 p.m. when he collided with a 2001 Toyota pickup truck. Witnesses say Narag was speeding when he attempted to negotiate a turn unsuccessfully. He lost control of the motorcycle and slid into the front end of the Toyota. The motorcycle and Narag continued sliding but eventually stopped on the right shoulder of the roadway.
Emergency personnel arrived on the scene but Mr. Narag had already succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Toyota, a 43-year-old Vacaville man, was unhurt. Both lanes of traffic remained closed for approximately two hours following the accident. San Mateo police are still investigating to determine what caused the collision but it is believed that excessive speed may have been the primary factor.
The unfortunate death of the motorcyclist involved in this incident demonstrates how quickly an accident can occur. While no one else suffered serious injury, the victim's family will now have to deal with the tragic loss of their loved one.
Had the fatal accident been caused by the negligence of another driver, he or she would likely have faced criminal charges. In addition to criminal penalties, the state of California also allows accident victims and their families to seek civil justice against individuals who cause harm through careless or reckless actions. Had Mr. Narag been killed because of another driver's negligent behavior, his family may have had grounds to seek damages through a wrongful death lawsuit.
