California Motorcycle Accident Kills Bible Study Student

Keep Motorcycles Off Endangered Species List

A California motorcycle accident involving a drunken truck driver with a suspended drivers license and a bible study student left one dead and one child fatherless. The fatal motorcycle accident happened in San Pablo, California on Wednesday night, April 7 when a drunk driver made an illegal turn in front of the motorcyclist, 35 years old Anthony Walker.

The drunken driver fled the scene of the motorcycle accident on foot to his home nearby, leaving the truck running and the motorcyclist wedged under the tires of the Toyota pickup truck. Police responding to the motorcycle accident tracked the drunk driver to his home where the suspect allegedly admitted causing the motorcycle fatality.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident caused By Driver With DUI

The drunk driver, 43-year-old Juan Manuel Ruelas, allegedly told the police he ran because he had been drinking earlier that night. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy get much worse. It seems the Ruelas had been convicted of a DUI just 2 months prior to the accident and he was driving with a suspended license.

The motorcycle rider was a responsible helmet wearing father of a baby girl leaving his Wednesday night bible study class when he was killed. He was still close enough to his church, Rock Harbor Christian Fellowship, for his friends to hear the horrible crash and rush to his aid as he lay dying on the California roadway. "We heard the crash and we went down to see what happened," said William Davis, a friend of Walker's from the class.

Hit And Run Driver In Motorcycle Fatality

"We saw Anthony under the vehicle. He was face down."  Walker was pinned from the waist down, under the passenger side of the truck said Davis. Walker's friends prayed as they tried desperately to keep their friend alive. As reported in mercurynews.com, upon their arrival, the police and paramedics quickly took over efforts to save him, but they could not revive him. San Pablo police Lt. Jim Creekmore said that not only was Ruelas driving on a suspended license he was also serving probation for the previous drunken driving conviction.

Ruelas was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony hit and run, vehicular manslaughter, and DUI into the County Jail in Martinez, California, in lieu of $200,000 bail. Lt. Creekmore said the death was San Pablo's first suspected vehicular manslaughter to occur this year, after the city recorded none last year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has named May as MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH and their "share the road" campaign now underway is to remind drivers to be more aware of motorcycle riders during the busier summer riding months.
